Long and rich history

Béziers is the departmental capital of the vast Herault wine plain crossed by the river Orb. Pierre-Paul Riquet, born in Beziers, designed the beautiful jewel of regional planning - the Canal du Midi. The canal was completed in 1681 and today is classified by UNESCO.

Béziers, a city of 75,000 inhabitants, is only 10km from the Mediterranean and 20km from the regional park of Haute-Languedoc, with its lakes and rivers as well as only 150km from the Pyrenees and Spain. Since the days of the Via Domitia, Beziers has been at the crossroads of the Mediterranean coast. The region has a wonderfully temperate climate, boasting nearly 300 days of sunshine a year.

The city of Beziers, with its long and rich history, has many wonderful monuments and museums which include the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire (12th century), the Museum of Natural History, the Garden of the Bishops and the charming esplanade, Les Allées Paul Riquet. The city also has an airport and an SNCF station.

The region surrounding Beziers is rich in history and has many interesting places to visit, such as the Oppidum d'Ensérune (early fortified town) and medieval Cathares sites and abbeys.
